Day 6- The Grand Canyon

Day 6: The Grand Canyon

Dopey’s are here another day where we started our morning waking up at 4 o’clock to load up the vans and bus to journey to the canyon. We ate a traveling breakfast that we had packed the night before that was a delicious bagel with peanut butter and a banana. Counselor William led us in some stretches to prepare and warm us up for the hike. Then we separated into the groups of the different distances of the hike. The group traveling a total of 6 miles left first and was followed by the group traveling 3 miles and then the group traveling 1 mile. The six mile group was cruising on the way down and made it to our destination at 3 miles in about an hour and a half. We sat down for a tasty lunch we prepared the night before. After resting for about half an hour we made our journey back to the top of the canyon. On the way back up the six mile group split up but all were out at the latest around 11am.  The three mile group made great time on the way down and broke off into sections for the way up but the whole group was out by 8 at the latest. A few campers decided to go a mile and they were all out of the canyon first and got to enjoy a relaxing morning.

After the campers returned from hiking and took their showers and began doing laundry we returned to camp for a delicious meal of Deaton stew. Sadly our meal was interrupted by a monsoon which drenched the campsite. Many campers items were soaked but all was well because of the laundry room and campers helped each other to hang up items to dry. Just as everything was drying off another storm hit and soaked the camp once again. This time everyone was significantly more prepared for the rain and the items that were soaked were limited. While it was raining we all enjoyed the general store and cafeteria where many people sat and ate delicious pizza with friends and bought lots of souvenirs.

Tonight for dinner we all purchased our own meals at and around the Grand Canyon which was lots of fun and very tasty. We all met up at the campsite around 7 o’clock for a sing-along where we jammed out to songs such as Wagon Wheel, Chicken Fried, Party in the USA, Sweet Home Alabama, Margaritaville and many more songs. Afterwards everyone was given new and improved Teens Westward Bound shirts that say on the back “I hiked the Grand Canyon, down is optional, up is mandatory.”

After a very eventful and memorable day we all climbed into our Eno’s for one more night of sleep at the Grand Canyon. We were all ecstatic to find out we got to sleep in in the morning and were leaving camp at 11am.
